Angel Fire, New Mexico 2008

We just returned from our summer trip to Angel Fire, New Mexico, to visit our cruise buddies, Becky and Russ Seymour. As always, we had a fun time which is evident from the pictures in our photo album. The temperature in Angel Fire was 45 degrees when we arrived, and it was raining. There was actually snow on the ground in the mountain pass before we reached town! We enjoyed chilly evenings and cool days; it was a bit tough to come back to 108. One of our traditions is to "hunt" for wildlife every evening. Two of our evening hunts were successful with deer sightings, the best one being of a doe and three fawn. But it was the two day-time sightings of elk right outside of the house that were so memorable for us. Jim captured some good close-ups with the camera of our visitors. Thursday night we were just getting ready to eat dinner when we looked out the window and noticed an elk in the yard. Before we knew it we had seven elk in our sights, two bucks, three does, and two babies. The highlight for us was when one of the babies started to nurse. It is such an incredible experience to witness nature at its very best. The other DHaynes/BSeymour tradition is to make a couple of 1000 piece puzzles during the course of the week. This year's photomosaic puzzle of a cow was more of a challenge than we expected; Becky and I were both very relieved when we completed the puzzle after dinner on Thursday and appreciated Jim's assistance in helping us finish it and Russ's support and encouragement over the course of the week. We managed two mountain "walks" (no "hiking" allowed per my physical therapist). I wore braces on both knees and borrowed two fantastic hiking sticks from my in-laws. The boys gave me a hand every now and then and Jim had to lift me on occasion, but I felt a great sense of accomplishment as I completed the two "walks" (albeit the shortened versions from a couple of years ago). We look forward to our next meeting with the Seymours aboard the Oosterdam in December as we cruise the Mexican Riviera.

Pictures can be deceiving

Don't let this picture fool you. This sweet, loving Grammy had a personal best bench press of 110 pounds today, and she is obviously darn proud of it!! Weightlifting continues to be one of my main forms of exercise, and I love it. The rehab is going well, and the therapist is talking about starting me on some cardio very soon. I am determined to be a very active Grammy when Natasha is here - 59 more days . . . but who's counting?!

Bad News/Good News From Thailand

We had a phone call this morning from Brian that he had been in a motorbike accident with Ann's cousin. While cruising along at approximately 40 mph, a dog ran in front of the motorbike. Brian said there was no time to brake or stop or turn to avoid hitting the dog. (Unfortunately, in Thailand, this is not a unique scenario.) They were checked out at the hospital; and thankfully, their injuries were mainly scrapes and bruises. Brian had been using the motorbike instead of the car to save on gas as their gas prices have also skyrocketed. Brian assures us that Ann insists that he drive the car to work again. Diane was at Mass this morning in thanksgiving for answered prayers!

Celebrating Jim's 54th birthday

We celebrated Jim's 54th birthday on Saturday with a relaxing barbeque at home with Kevin. We started our feast with hors d'oeuvres served in the swimming pool and then threw a flank steak and New York strip steak on the barbeque (after Kevin made an emergency trip to get gas!). Like a little kid, Jim couldn't wait to open his presents, but we made him wait. As you can see, the wait was well worth it! David, Brian and Kevin gave him a Kurt Warner jersey so that he can cheer on the Arizona Cardinals in style; we can't believe our first pre-season game is THIS Thursday. Go Cardinals!!!! We finished off the celebration with ice cream as we watched the Diamondbacks play the Dodgers. Birthday "weekend" continued the next day with a phone call from David, an E-mail from Brian, and lunch out with Diane after church. Wishing you many more happy birthdays, Big Guy, from your wife, your sons and their families!!
